Valley Oak Elementary was one of the first CUSD campuses to “Go Green” implementing a recycling program, providing reusable water bottles and shopping bags to the entire student body, and holding multiple “Go Green” rallies to educate students on how they can make a difference in helping the environment.

On Monday, April 27, Valley Oak will get a little “greener,” as representatives from Tree Fresno visit the campus to conduct an environmentally themed assembly and plant five new trees.

The trees, which will be planted on the south side of school next to the play structures, will create a shady area over the picnic tables. “This will also allow families to enjoy our playground after hours and comfortably watch their children on the basketball courts, the play structures or the soccer fields,” said Valley Oak third grade teacher Stacey Firpo, who wrote the Tree Fresno grant on behalf of Valley Oak. Through the grant, Tree Fresno donated two Camphor trees, two Autumn Fantasy Red Maple trees, and one October Glory Red Maple tree, which will be planted immediately following the assembly.

The assembly and tree planting event are intended to stress to students the importance of helping the environment and also encouraging community service.
