MORE THAN 34,000 CLOVIS STUDENTS TO START 2003-2004 SCHOOL YEAR MONDAY
Monday, August 25 marks the start of the 2003-2004 school year for students in Clovis Unified School District. Enrollment for the new year is expected to increase by close to 600, putting the district’s total student population over 34,000 for the first time in its 43-year history.
While no new CUSD schools are set to open during this school year, Fugman Elementary School, located near Cedar and Behymer avenues, is under construction and scheduled to welcome students in August of 2004. In August 2005, the district’s twenty-ninth elementary school is set to open at Clovis and Teague avenues. Both schools will be built using funds made possible by the passage of local bond Measure A in 2001 and the state facilities bond passed in 2002.
Five Clovis elementary schools begin the year with new principals at the helm. These principal changes include: Rich Smith, former principal of Dry Creek now at Nelson Elementary; Isabel Facio, former principal of Nelson now at Clovis Elementary; Bob Hansen, former principal of Clovis Elementary now at Dry Creek; Alan Harris, former deputy principal at Clovis High School now principal of Pinedale Elementary; and Rick Watson, former learning director at Clark Intermediate, now principal of Maple Creek Elementary.
At the district administrative office, Dr. Joe Hernandez has assumed the role of Area Superintendent, Buchanan Area. Hernandez replaces Rene Errotabere BHS Area Superintendent since 1994, who retired in June.
