Four Clovis Unified high school students were selected for the elite 2006 Honor Band of America. Only 100 students nationwide were chosen to participate in the band which will convene in Indianapolis to perform at Butler University’s Clowes Memorial Hall on March 25, 2006,
CUSD students chosen for the Honor Band include Sonia Joplin and Marissa Honda, both juniors at Clovis West High School, and senior Nicole van der Paardt and sophomore Braden Salvatore from Clovis East High School. The four musicians are active in the All-State Band and Orchestra, and are members of the Fresno Youth Symphony.
Since its inception in 1992, the Honor Band of America has earned a national reputation as one of the nation's finest student concert honor bands. The Honor Band has received international accolades in recent years, with a performance by invitation at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in 1997 and a concert tour of Japan in 1999. Students have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with renowned conductors, perform with world-class guest artists, premiere new commissioned works for concert band and perform for a "dream audience" of outstanding high school musicians and educators from across the country.
